- A living donor liver transplant is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the liver is removed from a healthy living person and transplanted into someone whose liver is no longer functioning properly. Patients who receive a living donor liver transplant are typically those who have exhausted all other treatment options and are in critical condition.
The remaining liver in the donor regenerates and returns to its normal size and function within two months after the surgery. Simultaneously, the transplanted portion of the liver regenerates and restores normal liver function in the recipient.
- Having a living donor allows the recipient to avoid some of the health complications that can occur while waiting for a transplant. People who receive a living donor liver transplant appear to experience fewer medical problems after the operation compared to those who receive a liver from a deceased donor. Survival rates are also higher with living donor liver transplants
