Asymptomatic Bacteriuria (UTI)

A simple urinary tract infection (UTI) (or cystitis) is an infection of the urinary tract caused by susceptible bacteria. This infection typically occurs in non-pregnant women who are not feverish and have a healthy immune system. The presence of pus and/or bacteria in the urine without any symptoms does not constitute a UTI and may not require treatment

Asymptomatic bacteriuria, on the other hand, is the presence of bacteria in the urine without any obvious signs of illness. It is common, especially in women of childbearing age and certain other groups such as pregnant women. It is a type of UTI, distinct from a simple UTI, as defined above. Therefore, all urinary tract infections (UTIs) in immunocompromised patients, men, pregnant women, and those accompanied by fever, kidney stones, sepsis, urinary tract obstruction, catheterization, or kidney involvement are considered complicated infections.

When is an asymptomatic UTI significant?

Undergoing a medical procedure that involves inserting a tube into the urethra* Pregnancy* A womans sexually active period* Undergoing urinary tract surgery* Having had diabetes for a long time* Having obstructions that prevent or impede normal urination, such as kidney stones* Having an enlarged prostate in men*

This type of urinary tract infection is usually diagnosed through a series of tests, including urinalysis, blood tests, and ultrasound. Treatments and medications, such as antibiotics, are used if the woman is pregnant, or if the patient is about to undergo urinary tract or kidney surgery, or if they have kidney stones.

When should you contact a doctor? If you are pregnant, have a history of urinary tract infections, notice any changes, or are elderly, consult a doctor to assess your condition and determine if treatment is necessary to prevent its progression or serious complications.
